Current Work

Pat is currently a doctoral candidate at Saint Mary’s University’s Sobey School of Business, under the guidance of Dr. Catherine Loughlin, PhD. His thesis work is investigating the relationship between burnout and leadership behaviour in coaches.

Other ongoing research projects involve how surgical team leadership affects patient safety in the operating room, and how learning organizations affect individual wellbeing.

In addition to his academic work, Pat is the research and innovation lead for Engage Nova Scotia, a Halifax-based not-for-profit using research to help understand and improve the wellbeing of all Nova Scotians.

Prior Work

Prior to beginning his research career, Pat spent 13 years in industry. His work focused predominantly on leading and managing engineers through complex systems integration projects in the rail and defence industries. He’s worked as a product manager, project manager, systems engineering manager, and as the head of configuration management at a large naval combat systems integrator.

Pat also founded The Engineering & Leadership Project, a blog and podcast dedicated to helping engineers become excellent leaders. The podcast was one of the top 5% globally in downloads.

Education and Certifications

Pat has a bachelor of engineering from Dalhousie University and an MBA from the Royal Military College of Canada. He’s also a professional engineer licensed in Nova Scotia, Canada, a Certified Systems Engineering Professional (INCOSE), and a certified Project Management Professional (PMI).
